AI Citations

AI citation tracking monitors how AI platforms reference, cite, and recommend your client's brand and content. As AI-generated answers replace traditional search for many queries, citation presence is becoming as important as SERP ranking.

What's tracked

For each monitored query, Rankup records:

  • Citation presence - is the brand mentioned in the AI response?
  • Citation position - where in the response does the mention appear? (early mentions carry more weight)
  • Source attribution - does the AI link back to the client's content?
  • Sentiment - is the mention positive, neutral, or negative?
  • Competitor presence - which competitors are also cited?

Change detection

Brand Radar compares each scan against previous results to detect changes:

  • New citation - brand appeared in a response where it wasn't before
  • Lost citation - brand was removed from a response
  • Position change - brand moved up or down within a response
  • Sentiment shift - the tone around the brand mention changed

These changes are surfaced as events in the Brand Radar dashboard and contribute to content effectiveness scores.

Query sources

Monitored queries come from:

  • Strategic keyword targets from Content Calendar Engine
  • Branded queries (e.g., "[brand] reviews", "is [brand] good")
  • Category queries (e.g., "best [industry] in [city]")
  • Custom queries you configure manually
