News & Narratives

The narrative monitoring system scans news sources for stories that mention or impact your client's brand. It serves as an early warning system for emerging threats and a tracking tool for positive coverage.

Data source

Rankup uses NewsData.io to monitor news articles from thousands of sources worldwide. Articles are filtered by:

  • Brand name and known aliases
  • Industry-specific keywords
  • Competitor brand names
  • Geographic relevance (based on client locations)

Threat detection

When a cluster of negative articles emerges around a topic, Rankup classifies it as a narrative threat with a severity level:

SeverityCriteria
LowSingle negative article from a minor source
MediumMultiple articles or coverage from a major source
HighWidespread coverage across multiple outlets, trending on social
CriticalMajor media coverage likely to impact AI perceptions and search results

Narrative alerts

When a narrative threat reaches Medium severity or above, Rankup generates a narrative alert that:

  • Appears in the Brand Radar dashboard as a highlighted threat
  • Feeds back into Location Pulse to flag affected locations
  • Can trigger a remediation brief (if Location Pulse is active)
  • Sends a notification to agency admins and strategists

Positive coverage tracking

Not all narratives are threats. Rankup also tracks positive coverage and industry mentions that can be leveraged in content strategy. Positive articles are surfaced in the dashboard and can be cited in content briefs.

Required API key

News monitoring requires a NewsData.io API key. The Basic plan (20,000 credits/month) is sufficient for most agencies. Configure it in Settings → API Keys.
